What are TMJ and TMD?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is located just in front of your ears.

The TMJ is one of the most complicated joints in the body. It can rotate, move backwards and forwards, and move side to side. This joint allows you to do everything from chew and yawn, to speak and swallow.

Problems with the TMJ, including headaches, pain or tenderness, may be caused by temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD).

What causes TMD?

A combination of factors contribute to most cases of TMD, such as injuries to the jaw or joint disorders like arthritis.

Bruxism (jaw clenching and teeth grinding) and neck muscle tension may make TMD symptoms worse.

How can my Dentist help my TMD symptoms?

To diagnose TMD, your dentist will do a thorough examination of your mouth, potentially including x-rays. If you are diagnosed with TMD, your dentist will create a plan to treat the underlying causes.

Unresolved pain from TMD can cause disruptions to your sleep that can result in insomnia. Other potential issues include diet concerns or malnutrition.

If you're suffering from temporomandibular joint disorder, make an appointment with one of our dental professionals to start treatment.

Symptoms of TMD

  • Pain or tenderness around the ear, jaw, face muscles or temples
  • Problems opening or closing your mouth
  • Clicking, grinding, popping or crunching when you chew, talk, or open your mouth
  • TMD can also be linked to neck pain and headaches

Contact your dentist or doctor if you have any of these TMD symptoms.
