What is a Gum Graft?

Also known as periodontal plastic surgery or a gingival graft, a gum grafting procedure involves taking gum tissue found on the roof of the mouth and transplanting it to an area with an exposed root surface.

Patients suffering from tooth sensitivity or pain as a result of receding gums may opt for a gum graft. Other reasons for choosing a gum graft procedure can be aesthetic, such as reducing the appearance of longer teeth.

Gum Recession & Dental Health

Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue surrounding your teeth shrinks away, exposing the tooth's root.

Typically, this process is gradual and you may not even be aware that your gums are receding until you experience pain or extreme sensitivity when your teeth are exposed to hot or cold temperatures.

This can cause extreme discomfort leading to tooth loss if the condition is left untreated, exposing the roots to potential decay.
